Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve answered some of the questions we get most often below. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just reach out to us here — we’ll be happy to assist.
If your query is about flights, take a look at our Flights page, where you’ll find detailed information on the topics travelers ask us about the most.
Welcome aboard! You’re in good company — our team is here to guide you every step of the way, and once your adventure begins, you’ll be sharing it with a fun group of travellers and your trip leader.
Here’s how the process goes:
Absolutely! In fact, most of our travellers come on their own. Typically, about 60% of the group are solo travellers, while the rest join with a partner or a couple of friends. Everyone arrives excited to explore, so it usually doesn’t take long before the whole group feels like one big circle of friends. Many past travellers who worried about joining alone were pleasantly surprised at how quickly they connected and built lasting friendships.
As a solo traveller, you can choose to:
Roommate pairings are made mostly by age, as we don’t collect detailed personal info for privacy reasons. While we can’t share your roommate’s details with you in advance, we’re happy to share yours (with your consent) so they can get in touch before the trip.
If you opt to share, here are a few tips to make it a great experience:
Sharing a room can be a great way to bond and even leave with a new lifelong friend!
A valid passport is required for all of our trips, and many countries also require it to be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date — so it’s a good idea to double-check your expiry date well in advance.
For most of our destinations, visas are not required for the majority of travellers. A few exceptions include:
Although it’s ultimately each traveller’s responsibility to have the correct documents, we’ll include reminders and helpful tips in your pre-trip emails for any country where a visa is commonly required.
No trip is perfect for everyone (well, maybe sunshine and chocolate come close). That’s why we want to be clear about what to expect, so there are no surprises along the way.
Our flexible, unstructured style attracts a wide mix of people. While many of our travelers are in their 40s and 50s, we welcome adventurers of all ages — and what really brings everyone together is the shared excitement for a memorable journey. Do keep in mind that our trips are considered active: you may need a moderate level of fitness for activities like hikes, carrying your own bag, or climbing aboard buses and boats. If you’re unsure about the activity level of a specific trip, we’re always happy to talk it through.
When it comes to comfort, think in-between — not luxury resorts, but definitely not budget hostels either. Our accommodations usually fall in the comfortable 3.5 to 4.5-star range, so you can expect quality stays without the fuss.
Yes — having local currency on hand will make things much easier. While ATMs are widely available in all of our destinations (and your trip leader can point you toward them), you’ll often save on fees if you exchange some money at home before you leave. We recommend avoiding airport exchange kiosks, as their rates tend to be poor.
Credit cards are accepted in some places, but not everywhere, so plan to use cash for most purchases. Make sure your debit card works internationally and has a 4-digit PIN. It’s smart to bring both a debit card and a credit card as backup.
Traveler’s cheques? Those have gone the way of the mullet (though the hairstyle is welcome if you’re rocking it). If any banking issues pop up while abroad, your trip leader will be there to help you sort things out.
Your adventure officially kicks off at 4:00pm on Day 1 in the lobby of our group hotel — that’s where you’ll meet your trip leader and fellow travelers. From there, the fun begins!
On the final day, there are no scheduled activities, so you’re free to leave whenever it suits your flight schedule. Got a 6am departure? No problem. Catching a late-night flight? Also works perfectly.
Early check-ins and late check-outs are always up to the hotel, depending on availability, but if you’d like to request one, just ask at the front desk when you arrive or depart.
Yes, we can arrange airport transfers for you although most of our tours include them.
After registering, your welcome email will outline the process. Then, 10 days before departure, you’ll receive your final travel documents, which include detailed arrival instructions, your confirmed itinerary, contact information, packing guidance, and other trip-specific details.
This way, you’ll know exactly what to expect upon landing, ensuring a smooth start to your trip.
In most cases, yes — but it depends on your plan. Many providers now include affordable international data and calls, though not all do, and costs can vary quite a bit. It’s best to check with your provider before you go so you know exactly what’s covered.
If your phone is unlocked, you’ve got two easy options:
Some mobiles will also work without changing SIMs, but roaming charges can be steep if they’re not part of your plan.
Of course! While the vast majority of our travellers are gay men, our trips are open to everyone. Just be ready for a fun-loving group of gay guys as your travel companions, and you’ll be warmly welcomed into the adventure.
Our trips are built around a relaxed, easy-going philosophy — no rigid itineraries or cookie-cutter tours here. We put in the hard work researching, exploring, and uncovering the best spots that most travellers wouldn’t find on their own, so you can simply enjoy the journey.
We’re travellers ourselves, not corporate suits, and our passion for exploring shapes every trip we run. Instead of handing out a set schedule, your trip leaders will work with the group to suggest activities, excursions, and cultural highlights. From there, you decide whether to pack your days with adventure or keep it simple with plenty of beach time.
It’s your holiday — we’re just here to help you make it the best experience possible.
It might sound like a dream job — showing travellers around stunning destinations — but being a great trip leader takes more than just a passport and a smile. Our leaders go through months of training before stepping into the role, making sure they’re ready to handle everything from logistics to group dynamics.
Of course, we like to have a little fun with the process too. Think sand testing for the softest beaches, food and drink sampling for maximum tastiness, and even pillow trials to check comfort levels. Beyond that, leaders are experts at keeping groups moving smoothly from one adventure to the next, all while ensuring nobody leaves behind their bags — or their good mood.
It’s a tough gig, and only a select few make the cut. We’re proud of our team, and we’re confident they’ll be one of the highlights of your trip.
Absolutely! We’ve welcomed travellers from every corner of the globe.
No matter where you’re based, as long as you can make it to the starting point of the trip, you’re more than welcome to join us.
Because we make non-refundable payments to our local partners as your trip gets closer, the flexibility we can offer depends on how far in advance you cancel. Here’s our cancellation schedule:
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance, which can cover things like trip cancellation, medical emergencies, or baggage delays. It’s the best way to protect your payments if unexpected circumstances stop you from travelling.
Simply put, your payments go directly towards flights, accommodation, and other services arranged on your behalf. As the trip approaches, these costs become locked in and non-refundable. Cancellation fees allow us to cover these expenses fairly — which is why travel insurance is always the safest backup.
At Adventure Proud, we’re not about rigid schedules or crack-of-dawn wake-up calls. Our trips are designed to be relaxed and carefree, so early mornings are kept to a minimum.
That said, there may be the occasional early start — usually on travel days, for certain activities, or to make the most of cooler morning weather. But these are the exception, not the rule.
Most of the time, we’d rather you wake up to the sound of waves or birdsong than the blare of an alarm clock. And don’t worry too much about jet lag — we find excitement tends to help travellers adjust to the new time zone pretty quickly!
None of our destinations currently require mandatory vaccinations. However, you may want to consider additional boosters or recommended shots before travelling.
While we know our destinations well, we’re not medical professionals, so it’s best to check with your GP or a local travel health clinic. Let them know exactly which regions you’ll be visiting so they can give you the right advice.
For up-to-date information, you can also visit the Smartraveller website, which is an excellent resource for Australian travellers.
We get this question a lot. While we can’t speak for why other LGBTQ+ trips are more expensive, at Adventure Proud we focus on keeping our prices fair without compromising on the experience.
We do this by running a lean operation — keeping a small, close-knit team, avoiding unnecessary overheads like retail office space, and cutting out costly middlemen. The savings we make go directly back into delivering value for our travellers.
And if you’re wondering whether a lower price means less quality, just take a look at the reviews from our past travellers who rave about their Adventure Proud experience.
Yes — all Adventure Proud travellers must have medical travel insurance that covers you while overseas. This is a standard requirement for any international tour operator, and you’ll need to provide proof of coverage before joining your trip.
We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance, which can protect you against unexpected events such as trip cancellation, delays, lost baggage, or other disruptions.
You can arrange cover through our Insurance page, or you may already have protection via an existing policy through your credit card, employer, or another provider.
Every group is guided by a knowledgeable and outgoing Adventure Proud trip leader whose job is to make sure you experience the very best of your destination. Our leaders rotate between trips, so don’t expect the same person your friend may have travelled with — they might be off exploring another corner of the world.
Each leader has spent plenty of time in the destinations they guide, so they’re well prepared to answer your questions, suggest activities, and help the group plan what to do each day — whether that’s scuba diving, hiking to a viewpoint, ziplining, or just a relaxed beach day.
Beyond creating memorable experiences, our leaders are also there to support you if unexpected challenges pop up, from a missed connection to a dodgy meal. With their Adventure Proud training and personal travel expertise, you can feel confident your trip leader will be one of the highlights of your journey.
